DEGREES OF SEPARATION
Selected artists and designers with a connection to New Orleans were asked to interpret a personal New Orleans experience. Ironically, the deadline for this project was two days after Hurricane Katrina devastated numerous areas in the Gulf Coast.
I held off on the project for a while, as it seemed futile and self indulgent to continue exploring my own absorbed memories of New Orleans while so many victims struggled for their basic survival and safety.
After some time had passed, I decided to continue with the project and stick with my original concept rather than turning it into an idea involving the hurricane. For me, New Orleans was about feelings of comfort and home, wanting to leave it but missing it when I did.
Hurricane Katrina revived all those feelings but in the end, it all felt the same.
